Unless you live under a rock, surely you are familiar with
carrots. Carrots are one of the most popular types of vegetables, they
are very crunchy and have a sweet taste. Carrots are powerful hosts and
great sources of vitamin A, vitamin K, fiber, vitamin C, potassium and
manganese. Therefore, their regular consumption on a day-to-day basis is
advantageous to our health and extremely recommended. Without further a
due, let's dive into four reasons you should have carrots included in
your daily diet:
1. Eyesight Improvement
Certainly, this is not the first time you heard carrots being good for the eyes. If you are still doubtful about this - let's clear this out. Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, a component that is converted into vitamin A in the liver; afterwards a transformation of vitamin A into rhodopsin takes place in the retina. Rhodopsin is a purple pigment which plays an integral role in the function of the vision. The retina of our eyes needs vitamin A to function properly. The insufficiency of it may cause cataracts, macular degeneration and night blindness.
2. Heart Disease Prevention
Carrots are packed with a great content of antioxidants, also known as carotenoids, such as alpha- and beta-carotene, cyanidinis and lutein. Recent studies have shown that when the antioxidants present in carrots work together, they protect the cardiovascular system from antioxidant harm, a protection that our body could not get if those antioxidant agents were taken separately. A 10-year study conducted in Netherlands has proven that constant intake of carrots helps to reduce the cholesterol levels, aiding the heart health.
3. Cancer Prevention
Research has shown that regular eating of carrots reduces the risks of colon cancer. Laboratory studies have shown that Polyacetylene, a substance found in carrots, has the capacity to inhibit the growth and development of colon cancer cells in the body. In other words, carrots provide powerful anti-cancer benefits.
4. Fight Against Aging
Undoubtedly, aging is one of the most concerning facts involving people above 30 years old. As stated before, carrots contain a great amount of beta-carotene, a component which plays an important role in combating against free radicals and toxins in the body and decelerates the metabolism of cells responsible for negative effects of aging.
There are numerous benefits of including carrots in your daily diet. You can easily find them in the market. They can be eaten in different manners, either raw or cooked. When heated, they lose certain phytonutritional properties due to the presence of beta-carotene which has proven to be a heat-stable carotenoid.
